William 'Bill' Abrum Dickison
William "Bill" Abrum Dickison, 75, Kokomo, passed away at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, June 7, 2019, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis due to an automobile accident. He was born on Nov. 8, 1943, in Kokomo, to Robert Abrum and Dessie Mae (Ellison) Dickison. On Dec. 24, 1971, at Southdowns Wesleyan Church in Kokomo, he married Lois Snyder, who survives.
Bill graduated from Western High School in 1962. He received his BS and MS degrees from Ball State University. His teaching career began in 1966 with Western School Corp. He taught fifth grade for two years, followed by junior high earth science. The majority of his years he taught high school geography, U.S. history, government and economics. He coached football for 15 years, and boys and girls track from 1966 to 1992. He was also a driver's education instructor for more than 25 years. After 43 years in education at Western, he retired in 2008. He was a certified national level USATF official, as well as an IHSAA licensed track and cross country official for 24 years, working 19 tournaments. He was also a licensed softball official for 16 years.
Bill worked for the safety patrol at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for more than 25 years. He was president of Russiaville Lions Club for several years. He was a member of First Friends Meeting, where he served on the finance and financial advisers committees. Since 1980, Christmas breaks were a family tradition in Madeira Beach, Florida. Last year his pride and joy was catching a 33" grouper while deep sea fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. He enjoyed his summers at Lake Tippy fishing and spending time with family and friends. Other hobbies included gardening and completing 1,000-piece puzzles.
Along with his wife Lois, he is survived by a daughter, Dawn Brinkman, and his sisters, Sharon Davis, Vonda (Doug) Ryman, Wanda (Don) Funk, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2019, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, Kokomo, with Pastors Jonathon Newton and Gary Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit from 3 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Bill's memory to Western High School 1962 Scholarship Fund, with checks payable to Community Foundation of Howard County or First Friends Meeting. Messages of condolence may be left online at www.shirleyandstout.com.
