Kokomo, IN - On the early morning of Wednesday, November 19, 2025, Misako Rose (née Dohi) Johnson, transitioned peacefully of natural causes. Misako was 90 years old.


Misako Johnson was born in Fukuoka, Kyushu, Japan, on February 16, 1935. She was the third child of Yukino and Shingo Dohi, both deceased. She had four sisters and one brother. On November 28, 1961, she married Joseph M. Johnson, USAF (Ret.) in Japan. Joe predeceased her on August 12, 2011.


She was a naturalized U.S. citizen. Misako was a member of AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary. She received Certificates of Appreciation for her tireless efforts supporting American veterans and Kindred at Home Hospice.


Misako enjoyed traveling, playing bingo, and attending Bon Odori festivals in Indianapolis. She loved cooking, crocheting, floral arranging and creating paper crafts. Misako had a passion for creating beautiful hanging mobiles and ornaments using origami cranes. She truly enjoyed her origami sessions with Kara Jenkins, Pat Hankinson-Brown and Naomi Hankinson. Kara and Misako were the master origami craftswomen, whereas, Pat and Naomi were the apprentices. In 1985, Misako won third place in the Leather, Wood and Fiber Fine Crafts category for her paper butterflies in the Arts and Crafts competition at Grissom Air Force Base.


Misako will be missed by dear friends Mineko Wilmore, Sue Dick, Takayo Hadway, Joyce Bowlin and Naomi Hankinson. Naomi was Misako's caregiver. Misako was predeceased by her best friend, Mitsuko Hankinson. She was a bonus member of the Hankinson Family. She always had a smile and interesting stories to share.


Misako will be remembered for her kindness, compassion, humor and generosity. Misako, like her husband, generously donated her body to the Anatomical Education Program at Indiana University School of Medicine.


A Service of Gratitude dedicated to those persons who have bequeathed their bodies to Medical Science will be held on Sunday, April 26, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. at Indiana University Auditorium on the Bloomington campus. Later, memorial services for Misako will occur in October 2026. Misako will be laid to rest at Crown Hill Cemetery located in Indianapolis, IN, section 41-A.
