Betty J. Hobbs Obituary

Betty J. Hobbs, 95, of Kokomo, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2024, at Waterford Place Health Campus in Kokomo.

She was born Feb. 11, 1929, in Yeoman, Indiana, to Leonard C. and Minnie K. (Simmons) Austin. She married Ray A. Hobbs on Sept. 9, 1950, in Highland Park Church in Kokomo. Ray preceded her in death June 8, 2016.

Betty was co-owner with her husband Ray of Hobbs Auto Electric from 1963-1995. She was a meticulous bookkeeper, and made sure everything was in order. Betty was a member of One Accord Church in Kokomo, the Winnebago Owners Club of America, the Indiana Winnebago Club and the FMCA, Family Motor Coach Association. Betty and Ray traveled across the United States in their motorhome. They particularly liked the west with all its history.

Betty had a green thumb, and enjoyed growing roses around the shop and the home her husband built, and she proudly lived in for 65 years up until a few days before her death. She was a huge supporter of WE CARE, donating many afghans and cross stitch items to the cause. She stitched together sunshine, and always encouraged others. One of her favorite sayings was "Keep your chin up." She always believed in giving everyone a smile. Betty enjoyed staying busy, she always found new craft ideas such as cake decorating, macrame, sewing, making costumes for her daughter and many other creative endeavors. When her children were young, she spent many hours driving them to their various activities. She also enjoyed collecting Coke memorabilia and music boxes. Both Betty and Ray were very patriotic, and proud to be Americans.

Surviving family include her daughter, Deborah (Terry) Hobbs Respondek; her son, David A. (Teresa) Hobbs; and daughter-in-law, Dorothy Hobbs Surface. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a special cousin.

Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Ray; parents; son, Steven; brother, Calvin Austin; and many beloved dogs she had over the years.

Visitation and funeral services will be held on Monday, Aug. 26, 2024, at One Accord Church, 2015 E. Carter St., Kokomo, IN 46901 with Pastor Scott Butzin officiating.
