Kokomo, IN. - Beryl Dean Etherington, 90, of Kokomo, passed away on April 6, 2025.
He was born on Sept. 27, 1934, in Kokomo, the son of the late Glenn and Edith (Simpson) Etherington. On Dec. 24, 1954, he married Barbara Ellen Gentry, who preceded him in death on Jan. 7, 2008.
Beryl Dean was a 1952 graduate of Western High School. After high school he spent two years studying at Purdue University, and made the decision to join the Army as a business clerk in October of 1954. Beryl Dean did his service in Germany, and was honorably discharged in March of 1957. After his time in the Army, he received his Bachelor's Degree in Teaching from Ball State University in 1959, and a master's degree in 1964 from Ball State. Beryl Dean spent his career as a business and math teacher, where he was known by his students as "Mr. E." He taught at Webster High School of Wayne County, Indiana, for four years and Kokomo Center Schools for 33 years, teaching at Bon Air Middle School and Kokomo High School. He also served as the high school athletics ticket manager at Kokomo High School from 1968 to 1996.
He was a past member of Courtland Avenue Friends Church, and became a member of Southdowns Wesleyan Church. He was a manager and treasurer at City of Firsts Credit Union (formerly known as Kokomo School Employees Federal Credit Union). After retirement, he worked in tax service at Bergstroms Accounting, and taught math at Ivy Tech. He was a treasurer for several community organizations such as the Howard County Retired Teachers Association, the Howard County Pioneer Auto Club, Southside Little League and the Kokomo Parents Babe Ruth League.
Beryl Dean is survived by his children, James (Ronda) Etherington, Daniel D. Etherington, Joseph M. (Rachel) Etherington and Ruth E. (Michael) Wikel; grandchildren, Tyler (Maegan) Etherington, Carly (Bobby) Ryan, Joseph (Bri) Wikel and Esther Etherington; great-grandchildren, Charlotte Etherington, Lucy Oliphant, Reese Ryan, Parker Ryan, Darren Wikel, Myla Wikel and Alex (Kristina) Topalovic; and brother, Dale Etherington.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, parents; and sister-in-law, Althea Etherington.
A funeral service celebrating Beryl Dean's life will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 14, 2025, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, Kokomo, with Dr. Mark Rennaker officiating. Military honors will be provided by the United States Army and the Kokomo VFW Military Rites Team. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 13, 2025, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Bridges Outreach Inc, 208 N.
