Walter's Story

Text size

Walter Lee Childress, 75, Sharpsville, died at 11:18 a.m. Monday, June 19, 2017, at St. Vincent Kokomo, with his family by his side. He was born Feb. 14, 1942, in Blackwater, Virginia, the son of Solomon Wesley and Cordy Myrtle (Bledsoe) Childress. On Sept. 30, 1966, in Kokomo, he married Shirley Orr, who survives.
Walter retired from Continental Steel in 1986 after 22 years of service. After his retirement, he spent most of his time in his garage. He enjoyed working on cars and trucks, so much so that he and his son restored a 1978 Chevy together. You could say he was a jack of all trades and loved to tinker with everything. He enjoyed going to car shows, driving around the neighborhood in his golf cart visiting the neighbors, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Walter had a wonderful sense of humor and was a real people person. The older he got the more he talked. But the most important thing about Walter is that he loved helping people. He made others a priority before himself.
Walter is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Childress, Sharpsville; son, Brian Childress, Sharpsville; daughter, Janelle Montgomery, Windfall; four granddaughters, Faith Montgomery, Alaina Montgomery, Brianne Childress, and Brooke Weir; sister, Enga (Harold) Stanley,Duffield, Virginia; nieces, Janie (Dave) Sprong, Kokomo, Debbie Gillenwater, Virginia, Carolyn (Miles) Osborne, Virginia, Sheila Browning, Kokomo, and Yvette (Lori) Orr, Kokomo; nephews, Bobby (Lana) Childress, Kokomo, Roger (Patricia) Childress, Elwood, Cecil (Missy) Gillenwater, Dinwiddle County, Virginia, Ed (Angie) Young, Kokomo, and Donnie (Kathy) McElroy, Kokomo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Audrey Gillenwater; brother and sister-in-law, Albert (Maudella) Childress; and nephew, Junie Young.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 24, 2017, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, with Pastors Billy Hale and Bill Meiring officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. Friends may visit with the family from 11 a.m. until time of the service on Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family for an education fund set for Faith and Alaina Montgomery. Messages of condolence may be left online at www.shirleyandstout.com
