Tom's Story

Tom W. Wachob, M.D., 94, Belleair, Florida, formerly of Kokomo, Indiana, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2017. Tom was born the son of Tom W. and Esther D. (Cooper) Wachob, July 16, 1923, in ElPaso, Illinois. On Nov. 15, 1952, he married Susan Niederwimer in Texarkana, Arkansas, and she preceded him in death May 30, 1992. On June 12, 1996, he married Dorothy Riggin in Florida, and she survives. In October of 2007, they moved to Florida permanently. He spent many years there enjoying his hobbies of golf and photography.
Dr. Wachob was a graduate of University High School in Normal, Illinois, Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois, and the University of Illinois Medical School in Chicago. He was a member of Sigma Chi and Nu Sigma Nu fraternities. After training in obstetrics and gynecology, he practiced in Texarkana, Arkansas, and established a private practice in Kokomo, retiring in 1985. He was certified by the National Board of OBGYN, was a member of the College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the Central Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He had been on staff at both St. Joseph Hospital and Howard Community Hospitals in Kokomo. He was a former chief of staff at Howard Community and president of the Howard Community Hospital Foundation.
He served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946 and the United States Air Force from 1947 to 1949. He then served in the Indiana National Guard from 1950 to 1952, and was a commanding officer of a Clearing Company.
In Kokomo he was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the Kokomo Country Club, where he served as a board member, and Rotary International, where he served as president in 1965. He also served on several community boards, including The American Cancer Society, Kokomo Affiliate, the YMCA, and Kokomo Federal Savings and Loan (now Security Federal). His Florida memberships included The Belleair Country Club and Anona United Methodist Church in Largo. He also served as president of the condominium association where he lived in Belleair.
Survivors include four sons, William K. Wachob, New York, Robert T. Wachob, Missouri, Thomas S Wachob, California, and James C. (Christa) Wachob, Indiana, and one daughter, Carol A. (Mike) Calvert, Ohio. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sue, and a brother, William C. Wachob.
A memorial service celebrating Tom's life will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, Kokomo, with Pastor Larry Newburg officiating. A private inurnment will be in Sunset Memory Garden. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
