Russell W. "Rusty" Porter, 77, formerly of Galveston, passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2017 in Aripeka, Florida. Russ was the son of Russell E. "Jiggs" and Thelma (Cunningham) Porter. He was born Jan. 23, 1939 in Athol Springs, New York. He married Lana Conn on May 11, 1984.
Russ was a 1958 graduate of Galveston High School and a four-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force. After serving in the Air Force, he completed an apprenticeship program and became a journeyman electrician. He worked as a member of the IBEW for over 40 years. For several years he owned his own company Porter Electric. As owner of Porter Electric he was offered the opportunity to start his nephews Matt and Tom Porter on their way to earn their apprenticeship and become a journeyman electrician continuing on the family tradition. Russ was also a 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Walton Masonic Lodge and a Shriner.
Survivors include his wife Lana Porter, Florida; daughter, Melissa (Lyle) Fast, Ohio; stepson, Matt Conn, Indianapolis; grandsons, Russell Evan Fast, Ohio, and Ryan (Amanda) Orban, Indianapolis; great-grandchildren, Harper and Micah; a sister, Judy (Duane) Crites, Buena Vista, Colorado; and brother, Jeff (Alice) Porter, Kokomo.
Russ was preceded in death by an infant son, Russell Thomas Porter; brother, Stephen L. Porter; and parents, Russell E. and Thelma Porter.
