Robert's Story

Robert H. West Jr. passed away unexpectedly Friday morning, March 17, 2017, at his home. Robert was born to Robert and Alma (Bibby) West in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania.
Robert was raised in Mount Union, Pennsylvania, graduating from Captain Jack High School in 1961. In 1964 he graduated from Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Bob proudly served in the U.S.A.F. during the Vietnam Era, receiving an honorable discharge in 1968.
Bob accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of the Mount Hope Baptist Church in Mount Union, Pennsylvania. He retired from Daimler Chrysler in 2003 and was a good-standing member of UAW Local 685. Other memberships include Elks 490, Kokomo, American Legion Post 177, and VFW, Kokomo. He was an avid bowler, pool player, and golfer. Bob had been active in several clubs, including the Aquarius Club and the Back Yard Gang. He previously coached YABA Leagues, PAL teams, and served as president of the Kokomo Cadets.
On Sept. 26, 1965, Bob married JoAnne Curry, and from that union are five daughters, Merry Young, Cynthia (Eric) Ussery, Carol Freeman, Michelle Isaac, Sieta (Latura) Coleman. He has one son, John (Michelle) Norris. Bob is survived by JoAnne; his six children; companion, Jerri Dye; brother, William (Lillian) Overby Sr.; sister, Wanda West; 21 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Vernon Overby; and sister, Letitia Turner.
There will be a gathering of friends and family from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 24, 2017, at Sunset Memory Garden Funeral Home, 2097 W. Alto Road. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 25, 2017, at Wayman Chapel AME Church, 920 Apperson Way, with a one hour prior visitation. Pastor Jack Woodard and Min. Carol Freeman will officiate. Interment will be at Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery, with full military honors. The family requests that all donations be made in Robert's honor to the donor's choice.
