Mereda Mae "Mert" Heflin, 89, Coshocton, Ohio, passed away Sunday, April 16, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. She was born Jan. 27, 1928, in Fairfield, Indiana, to the late Monroe and Geraldine (Fry) Powell.
Mert was a lifelong member of the Nazarene Church and taught the kids' Caravan Program at the church for many years. She loved to work, go to church, attend to her garden, and spend time with her family.
On Jan. 10, 1946, she married Max Heflin, who passed away in 1985.
Mert is survived by her daughters, Rhonda (John) Butts, Zanesville, and Janet (Gary) Forbes, Coshocton. She is also survived by her two grandsons, Ryan (Lindsey) Forbes and Jordan Forbes, both of Coshocton; two great-grandchildren, Baylor and Jex Forbes; sister, Betty Lou (Arlace) Duncan, Griffith; brother, Larry (Veda) Powell, Greentown, Indiana; and her foster daughter, Lucy Carter, Fredericktown, Ohio, and her family.
Along with her parents and husband, Mert was preceded in death by her sister, Clara Henry, and two brothers, Ernest Powell and Lee Powell.
Calling hours will be 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, 2017, at Given-Dawson-Paisley Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 20 2017, at the Church of the Nazarene, 1058 Orange St., Coshocton, Ohio 43812, with Pastor Steve Ward and Pastor Arlace Duncan officiating. Burial will follow at Coshocton County Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mert's name to the Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, C/O the Church of the Nazarene. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.
The family would like to thank College Park and Mert's caregiver, Dana, who has provided wonderful care to her these last several years.
