Melda Lou (Hutchcroft) Prather, 82, passed away Monday, June 5, 2017 in Kokomo. Born July 20, 1934, in Kokomo, she was the daughter of the late Clifford E. and Martha May (Brown) Hutchcroft.
Melda graduated from Bunker Hill High School in 1952, and then went on to become a secretary for the Kokomo School Corp. for 40 years before retiring. She took great pride in being independent and doing things in her own way.
When she was a kid, Melda was an active member of the Bunker Hill Methodist Church. As an adult, she was a member of the Bunker Hill Alumni Association and would faithfully attend their annual reunions. For several years, she has spent her winters in Bradenton, Florida, and had a group of friends there whom she would meet every morning at McDonald's and spend hours socializing with. While in Kokomo, she enjoyed going out with her friends for dinner.
Melda is survived by her sister, Susanne Galloway; a nephew, David (Susan) Galloway; three great-nephews, Joe (Anna) Miller, Jeremy (Sandra) Miller, and Jasen Galloway; great-great-nephews, Dustin, Ethan, and Kolter; and great-great-nieces, Katie and Ellie. She is also survived by her special friends, Joyce (Frank) Zody, and Sharon (Carol) Kinder.
In addition to her parents, Melda was preceded in death by two brothers, Phillip Joe Hutchcroft and Jerry Allen Hutchcroft, and her special friend, Gene Conard.
A public visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, at Sunset Memory Garden Funeral Home. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 8, at the funeral home, with another public visitation held one hour before service. Melda will be laid to rest at Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery.
