Max's Story

Max L. Richards, 86, Kokomo, passed away at 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, 2017, at Community North Hospital. He was born Feb. 17, 1931, in Windfall, to Oscar and Garnet (Bogue) Richards. On May 10, 1959, Max married Carol Rayl, and she survives.
Max was in the United States Navy and Air Force, serving during the Korean War. He worked for Stellite and was a plant layout engineer for Delco, retiring in 1987. Max was a lifetime member of the VFW, member and past president of the Eagles, a volunteer for the American Cancer Society, a part-time statistician for the Colts in their early years, and was a high school and church league basketball referee. He also served as president of the Delco fishing club. Max loved to go fishing, loved boating, golfing, bowling, dancing and working in his garden. In addition to enjoying 30 years of retirement, he enjoyed 15 years of summer fun at the lake with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife Carol Richards, Kokomo; daughters, Dawn (Bryan) Petriko, Fishers, and Cathy (Steve) Frazee, Alexandria; sons, Michael S. Richards, Kokomo, and Joseph (Katie) Richards, Kokomo; brother, Ed (Malnee) Richards, Kokomo; 11 grandchildren, Ali M. Petriko, AJ Richards, Audra (Rob) Wilkey, Brittany (Tyler) Meier, Dylan Petriko, Ethan Richards, Josh Petriko, Kyle (Sarah) Richards, Nick Petriko, Tiffany (Terry) Clegg, Traci (Mike) Murphy; and great-grandchildren.
Max was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Garnet Richards; son, Stephen Richards; four brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13, 2017, at Brookside Free Methodist Church, 190 E. 400 South, Kokomo, with Pastor Doug Benham officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memory Garden with military honors. Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road.
