Mary's Story

Text size

Mary Janice Reed, Kokomo, joined her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at 11:37 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, 2017. Mary's family sang and prayed with her while she passed on to Heaven. She was born in Kokomo, Indiana, on April 1, 1947, to Raymond and Shirley Phipps.
Mary married the Rev. M. David "Doc" Reed on Nov. 27, 1965, at West Middleton Church of God. David and Mary later went on to pastor the West Middleton Church of God for more than 25 years. Mary was dedicated to the Lord's work playing the organ, teaching Sunday school and picking up those who needed rides. Mary and David were married nearly 45 years.
Mary worked at Western Elementary and Christian Heritage schools as a teacher's aide. She made many friends and was always a smiling face at Cracker Barrel Country Store and Restaurant. She was employed there for over 15 years. She was a member of the former West Middleton Church of God and attended Bethel Tabernacle and Pilgrim Holiness Church.
Mary loved her husband and children so very much. She also loved, adored and helped her grandchildren every way she could. Those who knew Mary loved and were blessed by her smile and gentle Christ-like nature.
Mary could often be found working in her flower gardens. She was chosen as a participant for the Howard County Garden Stroll in 2012 and 2013. Mary also enjoyed painting and took lessons for several years.
Mary and David had three children, Wade and Serena Reed, Kokomo, David and Pamela Reed, Kokomo, and Stephanie and Jay Parent, Galveston.
In addition to her children, she is survived by six grandsons, Caleb Reed, Clayton (Kayla) Reed, Adam (Jamie) Reed, Luke Reed, Porter Parent and Parker Parent; five great-grandchildren, Chase, Aria, Carter, and Alaina, and their mother Amanda Reed, and Crixus and his mother Ella Gauvin; siblings, John (Phyllis) Phipps, Donna (Lowell) Roode, and Barry Phipps; and sister-in-law, Maggie Phipps.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and siblings, Shirley Campbell and Robert Phipps.
Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, 2017, at Bethel Tabernacle, 661 W. 400 South (Indiana 26), Kokomo, with Pastors Steve Branstutter and David Cornelius officiating. Burial will follow in South Union Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the church.
