Mary's Story

Mary Agness Mason, 70, was called home to sing "Gloria" with the angels before her loving Heavenly Father and Savior Jesus Christ. She joined her Christian circle of family and friends Saturday, March 11, 2017. Mary was born July 14, 1946, in Bristol, Virginia. She was a devoted daughter of Herbert and Ruthada Johnson, Kokomo. She married Stuart Mason in Burlington Aug. 7, 1981.
Music was very important to her. She was a skilled organist and pianist and played bassoon in the Bryan (Ohio) High School orchestra. She was very active in Girl Scouts while living in Bryan.
Mary was a member of Chapel Hill Christian Church. She loved being involved with the children's programs, worship, VBS and Bible study and women's groups wherever she lived.
She received her B.A. in education from Indiana University. She retired after 25 years of being the director of Howard County Children's Center. Mary was awarded several recognitions as director. Among her awards was the "Outstanding Service" award by the Kokomo Area Career Center Cooperative Education division. She was active in other community service projects throughout her lifetime. Mary lived a life of service to God, family and community.
She is survived by husband, Stuart, Kokomo; son, Vince (Gina) McGowen; grandchildren, Isabella, Sophie and Gus McGowen, Farmington, Utah; daughters, Marissa McGowen, Kokomo, and Macey Mason, Kokomo; special family friend, Matt Lam, Greentown; and two sisters, Sherry (Mike) Penrod, Columbus, Ohio, and Debbie (Denny) Williams, West Frankfort, Illinois. Mary loved spending time with her many special nieces and nephews. She also had a precious (fur baby) pet dog, Rocky Balboa Mason.
The funeral service for Mary will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Chapel Hill Christian Church, 2600 W. Alto Road, with Pastor Richard Saxton officiating. Friends are invited to visit from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the church.
