Mary Lou's Story
Mary Lou (Pelgen) Donoghue Ricketts, 89, Venice, Florida, a former Kokomo resident, passed away Wednesday, June 21, 2017, in Venice, Florida. Mary Lou was born Sept. 18, 1927 to Oscar and Flo (Wenger) Pelgen in Kokomo, Indiana. She was married to Robert E. Donoghue, who preceded her in death in 1984. In 1986, Mary Lou married Dr. James A. Ricketts, who also preceded her in death in 1996.
She was a 1945 graduate of Kokomo High School. After high school, Mary Lou was employed as an operator with Indiana Bell Telephone Company for close to two decades and became a life member of the Telephone Pioneers. She started a second career working as a dental assistant until retiring in 1986 to start a life in Florida, eventually building a house in Venice.
Mary Lou was very active in the Kokomo community over the years serving as president of the Women's Fire Auxiliary, Board Member of Cheer Guild and the Women's Republican Club. In her later years in Florida, she was also a member of the Venice Plantation Golf and Country Club where she enjoyed the nine-hole golf league. She had been a co-chairman and committee member of sales to benefit the "Foundation Community Services."
Mary Lou loved the Lord and was faithful to her Catholic upbringing. In addition to her formative years at St. Patrick Catholic Church, she was a member of the St. Joan of Arc church community. In Englewood, she attended St. Raphael's and in Venice, Our Lady of the Lourdes.
Mary Lou was deeply loved by her children and had a special relationship with each of her grandchildren. She leaves them with endearing memories that will trickle down generations to come.
Mary Lou is survived by her four children, Sherrie (Gene) Uttinger, Linda Reeves, Karen (Pat) DeMoss and Patrick (Debby) Donoghue; 10 grandchildren, Chris Uttinger, Greg (Shannon) Uttinger, Ann (Andy) Jones, Aimee Rivera (Randy) Cole, Matt Reeves, Tim (Kesha) DeMoss, Kristy (Everett) Mills, Sarah (Erik) Henry, Holly (Darrin) Parrish and Carly Donoghue; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; a brother, Ronald (Sue) Pelgen; sister-in-law, Mary E. Donoghue; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Michelle; son-in-law, Alan Reeves; two brothers; and three sisters.
Funeral services will held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 27, 2017, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, with Rev. Fr. David Huemmer officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday.
