Hazel (Hofert) Baughman, 93, Kokomo, passed away at 10:10 a.m. Sunday, July 2, 2017, at her home. She was born Oct. 31, 1923, in Linton, the daughter of the late Earl J. and Lena M. (Strietelmeier) Hofert. On April 8, 1945, she married Donald Warren Baughman. They were married for 61 years when he preceded her in death on Dec. 26, 2006.
Hazel was a 1941 graduate of Linton-Stockton High School and had attended Indiana University and Indiana Business College. She had worked as a stenographer in the Ordnance Department Headquarters in the First Troop Carrier Command at Stout Field in Indianapolis for three years. Hazel was a member of First Evangelical Presbyterian Church and served as an Elder. She was the church's first librarian, and a member of the Alicia Coles Circle.
Hazel was an avid gardener, taking great pride in her flowers, vegetables, berries and her yard. She was an accomplished seamstress, sewing clothes for her family and furnishings for her home. Hazel and her husband, Don, walked together almost daily in their neighborhood for over 25 years. She was an excellent cook and baker. In later years, she enjoyed traveling with her adult children for family events and sightseeing to destinations such as Arizona, Georgia, Iowa, Tennessee and West Virginia.
Hazel is survived by her children, Carol (Thom) Sulanke, Carl (Nancy) Baughman and Alan (Sue) Baughman; grandchildren, Sara (Chris) Colvard, John (Lora) Baughman and Army Captain Daniel (Erin) Baughman; and great-grandchildren, Maria Colvard, Thomas Colvard, Josephine Colvard, Carter Baughman and Grant Baughman.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Earl J. Hofert Jr.; and sister, Dorothy Letterman Mengering.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, July 7, 2017, at First Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 2000 W. Jefferson St., with Pastor Jerry Van Auken officiating. Burial will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Fairview Cemetery in Linton. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Friday at the church.
