George's Story

George H. Dean, 73, Kokomo, passed away at 3:41 a.m. Saturday, June 3, 2017. He was born Nov. 25, 1943, in Essex, Missouri, to Loyd J. and Ora B. (Glendenning) Dean.
George served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1969 and was awarded the Bronze Star for valor and two Purple Hearts. George was proud of his service to his country. He was a co-founder of a group called Hoosiers Helping Heroes. They sent care packages to Indiana soldiers monthly for 10 years. During that time, they sent over 10,000 packages to our soldiers in war zones. He helped start the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 736. He also belonged to the American Legion Post 6, the Disabled American Veteran Chapter 28 of Howard County, the Vietnam Veteran Association, the VFW Post 1152, and the 40/8 Voiture #1103. He was retired from Chrysler and was a motorcycle enthusiast. He also enjoyed woodworking.
He is survived by his granddaughter, Nancy Ann (Lance) Johnson; great-grandchildren, Logan, Kylie, Cody and Amanda and a new baby due in August; brother, Terry (Sandy) Dean, Bunker Hill; sister, Martha "Marcia" Richardson, Kokomo; nieces and nephews, Eric (Terri) Dean, Brenda (Mitch) Eldridge, Sabrina (Keith) Stipes, Chrisi (Anthoney) Wardlow and Bill (Sandy) Richardson; several great-nieces and nephews, including Jacob Richardson and Jenna Richardson, whom he loved dearly; and several great-great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Tracy Meehan; parents; and brother, Jim Dean.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, with Rev. Ruth Lawson officiating. Burial will follow in Marion National Cemetery with military honors provided by the United States Army and the Kokomo VFW Military Rites Team. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
