Ellen J.'s Story
Ellen J. (Riley) Morris, 86, passed away in her sleep Friday, July 21, 2017, at her home in Jacksonville, Florida. A former resident of Kokomo, she was born Jan. 21, 1931, in Howard Township to Edwin B. Riley Sr. and Roberta (Klingman) Riley.
She grew up on her Grandfather Riley's farm and attended Howard School. She graduated from Northwestern High School in 1949 with the first senior class. On Sept. 16, 1950, she married Russell "Jim" Morris Jr. at Hillsdale EUB Church. Locally she was employed as an accountant for the Armstrong-Landon Co. and Swartwout Fabricators.
In the 1960s Ellen's family moved to Indianapolis and then in 1973 to Jacksonville, Florida, where she managed the office of the Southern Electric Co. She became president of the company and didn't retire until age 80. She was a hard-working, independent woman and always tried to do her best in any situation. She was devoted to her family and friendly to everyone. Her hobbies included sewing and knitting, reading mysteries, working puzzles, and watching sports. She loved animals and formerly owned and operated the Mandarin Riding Stables.
Surviving are a son, Steven H. (Tiffany) Morris, Jacksonville; a daughter, Stacee R. (James) Edgar, St. Augustine, Florida; two brothers, Edwin B. Riley Jr., Kokomo, and Robert D. (Suzanne) Riley, San Antonio, Texas; two sisters, the Rev. Cynthia Anne (Timothy) Kumeh, Russiaville, and Marcia L. Agents, New Baltimore, Michigan. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Diana McCoy, Kokomo, and Dixie Larson, La Crosse, Wisconsin; 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, in 1990, parents, stepmothers, Bettie Riley and Gladys Riley; daughters, Susan E. Davis and Michelle L. Morris; son-in-law, Robert Davis; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jack and Betty Broo; sister-in-law, Carolyn R. Riley; and brothers-in-law, the Rev. Richard Girton and Clements Agents.
Visitation and a graveside service were July 26, 2017, at the Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel in Jacksonville, Florida, with burial in Oaklawn Cemetery. Condolences and memories may be shared with the family at www.dignitymemorial.com.
