Dorothy J. Van Winkle, 76, Kokomo, passed away at 9:03 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, 2017, at Community Howard Regional Health. She was born Feb. 4, 1941, in Bulls Gap, Tennessee, to Grady and Goldie (Gillam) Lawson. On Dec. 24, 1958, she married Pastor Algie R. Van Winkle, and he survives.
Dorothy was a dedicated and loving wife, mother and homemaker. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed canning and keeping house. Together, she and Algie pastored at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist and Grace Missionary Baptist Churches.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Travis D. Van Winkle, Indianapolis, Christopher J. (Sherry) Van Winkle, Kokomo, and Brian C. (Melissa) Van Winkle, Kokomo; two brothers, Lester Lawson, Kokomo, and Darrell Lawson, Kokomo; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Reba Sutton; daughter-in-law, Ronda Van Winkle; and sister, Shirley Harrell.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017, at Honey Creek Missionary Baptist Church, 250 Nashville St., Russiaville, with Pastors Bobby Jewell and Lehmon Hale officiating. Burial will follow in Kokomo Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the church.
