Charles E. Smith (Charlie), 70, died June 23, 2017, in Scottsdale, Arizona.
He was born Aug. 15, 1946, in Elwood, Indiana, the son of Oris K. Smith and Levina M. Smith (McMains).
Charlie was a graduate of Tipton High School. He had a certificate in communications from Indiana University Kokomo. He was a retired self-employed tradesman. Charlie served his country faithfully and honorably upon his draft into the United States Army from July 1966 to Dec. 1971. During his service, he was awarded the Good Conduct medal and National Defense Service Medal. He was also listed as an Expert Rifleman.
He is survived by his daughter, Tanya (Eric) Wright, Kokomo; son, Derek (Shannon) Smith, Kokomo; grandchildren, Celeste (Kevin) Dodd, Indianapolis, Morgan (Austin) Cooper, Kokomo, Brittany King, Fort Wayne; Dustin Smith, Fort Hood, Texas, Lindsay Wright (Dallas McKay), Kokomo; great-grandchildren, Teagan Ritchie, Fort Wayne, Hannelore Dodd, Indianapolis, Oakley Cooper, Kokomo, Roland Dodd, Indianapolis, Ammalee McKay and Elliott McKay, Kokomo; brothers, Max (Maryann) Smith, Minnesota, Orie (Aneta) Smith, Angola; sisters, Regina J. Sheets, Terra Haute, MarryAnn (Bill) London, Sharpsville, Amy Smith (Joy Mitchell), Tipton, Mitzi Shepard, Noblesville; dear friends and his Arizona family, Joy and Ed Estes and their daughter, Kasey, and Mike and Karen Dannewitz; along with several nieces and nephews.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Janis Matouk and Cozy Dell; and brothers-in-law, Harry Dell, Bill Sheets and Jack Shephard.
Charlie took great pride in his children, grandchildren and his family. His great sense of humor, philosophical conversations and beautiful smile will be deeply missed by all.
There will be a private committal service with a military service at a later date in his hometown of Tipton.
