Carmella (Calabro) Aspinwall, Hobart, entered the gates of heaven Monday, March 6, 2017, while being held in the arms of her family at her home. Carmella was born in Peru, on April 29, 1929, to the late Vincenzo and Mary (Venice) Calabro. She graduated from Hobart High School with the class of 1947. On March 3, 1953, she married William E. (Bill) Aspinwall Jr. of Peru, and they enjoyed 49 years of marriage together before his passing in July of 2002.
Carmella worked for the General Telephone Co. as an operator, the Budd Plant, and then later as an operator and receptionist for the Holiday Star Theater Resort in Merrillville. She was a lifelong member of St. Bridgett's Catholic Church in Hobart and an active member of the St. Mary's Auxiliary until her health prevented her from attending meetings. Carmella will be remembered by all those who knew and loved her as a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.
Carmella is survived by her son, Thomas Aspinwall, Joliet, Illinois; daughter, Anita (Terry) Alasauskas, Valparaiso; grandchildren, Amanda Alasauskas and Bradley Alasauskas; sister, Margaret (Oliver) Case, Kouts; and sister-in-law, Carol Calabro, Kokomo.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; son, Augustine (Augie) Aspinwall; and her brothers, Anthony Calabro and James Calabro Sr.
Visitation for Carmella will be 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 9, 2017, at the Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel, 600 W. Old Ridge Road, Hobart. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 10, 2017 at the funeral home, with Deacon Bonta officiating. Interment will follow in the Calvary Cemetery in Portage.
Memorial contributions may be made in Carmella's honor to the Southern Care Hospice or the Parkinson's Disease Foundation.
