Alfred's Story

Alfred E. Howery, 87, Tipton, died at 5:43 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, 2017, at Riverview Hospital in Noblesville. He was born Nov. 4, 1929, in Goodrich, Kansas, to Harley and Ruth (Wertz) Howery. On Oct. 19, 1952, he married Reba A. Ragan, and she survives.
Alfred started working at Oakes Manufacturing in Tipton in 1947. He left Oakes in 1962 to start working at Delco Radio in Kokomo, retiring from there in 1993. Alfred was a member of the U.A.W. Local 292. He attended Trinity Wesleyan Church in Tipton. Alfred was a gardener and an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He was well-known for being very handy and could fix anything. He enjoyed reading to his children and grandchildren.
Alfred is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, Reba; four children, Greg Howery and wife Lisa, Kokomo, Patti Tokar Canton and husband Chris, Bristol, Indiana, Anita Harner and husband Charlie, Tipton, and Jon Howery and wife Beverly, West Palm Beach, Florida; four siblings, Eldon Howery, Joplin, Missouri, Linda Hudson and husband Charles, Tipton, David Howery and wife Janette, Crofton, Kentucky, Fern Heilmann and husband Joe, Onalaska, Texas.
He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, including Jessica Beck, Julie Lytle, Elizabeth Martin, Ryan Howery, and Jamie Howery, and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.
Alfred's funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16 at the Trinity Wesleyan Church in Tipton. Visitation will be Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Tipton. Young-Nichols Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
