William Mark "Bill" Garner, 81, Hartford City, passed away at 11:08 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2017, at Miller's Merry Manor in Hartford City. He was born Aug. 6, 1936, in Arlington, Virginia, the son of the late Roscoe H. and Thelma (Fawcett) Garner. On May 17, 1957, at Alto Methodist Church, he married Norma Banks, and she survives.
Bill was a 1954 graduate of Western High School. He then graduated from Purdue University in 1958 with a bachelor's degree in math and science. Bill served with the United States Army, earning the rank of first lieutenant. Although Bill had been a foreman for Continental Steel and had taught math for Northwestern School, he had a passion for farming. At one time, Bill owned a Christmas tree farm, where he would sell Christmas trees and pumpkins. Bill also trained and raced standard bred horses for 30 years He was a Life Master Bridge player, a lifelong Cubs fan, and a member of the American Iris Society.
Along with his loving wife of 60 years, Norma, Bill is survived by his children, Jenice (Steven) Steiner, West Middleton, William "Bill" Howard (Christina) Garner, Vaxjö, Sweden, and James T. Garner, Hartford City; grandchildren, Sarah (Westin) Pigott, Tom Steiner, Gina Steiner, Laura Steiner, Sam Garner, Ben Garner, Gabriel Garner, and Matt Garner; two great-grandchildren, Jake and Liam; sister, Catherine Steiner; and one niece and two nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25, 2017, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road. Burial will follow in New London Cemetery.
