W. Joyce's Story
W. Joyce Carter, 91, Fishers, passed away Oct. 26, 2017. Joyce was born Nov. 18, 1925, in Tipton County to the late Franklin J. and Lillian V. Dietz Grimme. Joyce was a 1943 graduate of Prairieville High School and married Francis N. Carter Oct. 26, 1946. He preceded her in death June 2, 1994.
She worked at Bank One as a teller for 20 years, retiring in 1978, and was previously employed at J. C. Penney Co. on the Circle for 20 years. Joyce was a member of Christian Park Reformed Church and also attended Hope Community Church of Lawrence. She was a volunteer for many places including Wheeler Mission, Benton House, Senior Citizen Center of Indianapolis and their Thrift Store and also at Community Hospital East for 20 years. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #64, Irvington Historical Society and Thomas Carr Howe High School Alumni Association.
Her ancestors were instrumental in the development of Irvington when they moved to the area in 1855.
Joyce is survived by her loving children, Connie Stephens, Joel Kevin Carter and Kama Carter; three grandchildren, Joshua Stephens, Amanda Lumpkin (Scott) and Rachel Weidner (Derek); four great-grandchildren, Lillian and Werner Weidner, Kyle and Caden Stephens; and a brother, Berlye J. "Jake" Grimme (Jacqueline).
Five brothers and one sister preceded her in death.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2017, from 10 a.m. until time of services at 2 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel, 9606 E. Washington St., Indianapolis.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Irvington Historical Society and or to the Thomas Carr Howe High School Alumni Association.
