Virginia's Story

Virginia C. McKibben, 87, Seneca, South Carolina, and formerly of LaGrange, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2017, at the Lila Doyle Nursing Care facility, Greenville Hospital System/Oconee Medical Center in Seneca. Mrs. McKibben was born Dec. 31, 1929, in Fairmount, Indiana, to Leslie and Mary (Young) Wilbern; they preceded her in death.
In 1971, she moved from Bunker Hill to LaGrange, where she lived until moving to Seneca, South Carolina, in 2011. Mrs. McKibben was an elementary school teacher for many years, retiring from Lakeland School Corp., where she taught at Wolcott-Mills Elementary School in Wolcottville, Indiana.
Virginia was an active member of the LaGrange First United Methodist Church in LaGrange, where she was a member of the Ruth Circle and the church choir. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority and the LaGrange County Retired Teachers Association. In South Carolina, she was an active member of Eternal Shepherd Lutheran Church, and briefly sang in the church choir.
On Dec. 31, 1948, in Huntington, Indiana, she married James V. McKibben Jr.; Mr. McKibben preceded her in death Dec. 3, 2006.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, James V. III and Jody McKibben, Seneca, South Carolina, and Mark and Michelle McKibben, Durango, Colorado; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Later this fall, a celebration of Virginia McKibben's life will be held in LaGrange at The LaGrange First United Methodist Church.
The family would like to thank both Lila Doyle and Hospice of The Foothills for their excellent care and consistent support during the final months of their mother's life.
Burial will take place privately in Greenwood Cemetery in LaGrange.
