Vernon Gene Fillenwarth, 76, of Kokomo, passed away at 1:42 p.m. Sunday, April 15, 2018, at Community Howard Regional Health. Gene was born Feb. 27, 1942, in Tipton County to the late Floyd and Emogene (Newlin) Fillenwarth. His marriage to the former Alice L. Rice was on Nov. 18, 1961. She preceded him in death March 13, 2006.
Gene was a 1960 Western High School graduate. He retired after 13 years from Martin Marietta. For several years he worked at Chandlers Garage and later owned and operated it. In the 1960s he worked at Chrysler. Gene attended Russiaville United Methodist Church. He served over 40 years for Russiaville Volunteer Fire Department. He was a former member of the Russiaville Lions Club.
Survivors include a daughter, Lisa (Greg) Hobbs, of Russiaville; a son, Kent (Nichole) Fillenwarth, of Kokomo; grandchildren, Cody Hobbs, Alicia (Austin) Pearson, Dalen Fillenwarth, Briley Fillenwarth, Camber Fillenwarth; a great-grandson, Alan Pearson, and another great-grandchild due in September; a brother, Jerry (Kathleen) Fillenwarth, of Marion; three half sisters, Joyce (Jim) Johnson, Judy Johnson, and Thelma Whitacre, along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Alice L. Fillenwarth.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2018, at Russiaville United Methodist Church, 180 N. Union St., with Pastor Anne Girton-Kumeh officiating. Friends may visit with the family from noon to 1:30 p.m., also at the church. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memory Garden Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Russiaville United Methodist Church or the Russiaville Fire Department. Stout & Son Funeral Home, Russiaville, is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.stoutandson.com.
