Thomas's Story

Thomas Ivan Hess, 80, Kokomo, passed away at 6:45 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2018, at his home. He was born Aug. 21, 1937, in Logansport, the son of the late Clair William and Mary Bernice (Coughlin) Hess. On June 21, 1964, at Central Christian Church in New Albany, Indiana, he married Sharon Ann Oakes and she survives.
Tom was a graduate of Logansport High School and of Rhett's College, where he received an associate degree in electronics. He served with the United States Army from 1962-1966. Tom retired in 1996 after more than 31 years of service from Delco Electronics as a general supervisor of manufacturing. He was a member of First Evangelical Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed golfing, antiquing, gardening and traveling, and he also enjoyed coaching Little League baseball for many years. He was known for his good sense of humor.
Tom is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Sharon Ann Hess; children, Colleen Lynn (Doug) Hooper, John Thomas (Lisa) Hess, and David Edward (Laura) Hess; grandchildren, Patrick Thomas Hess, Cullen James Hooper, Maggie Catherine Hooper, Natalie Lynn Hess, and Liliana Aylin Hess; step-grandchildren, Shaylie and Trevor Stucker; and sister, Judy Ann (Thomas) Scherer.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Clair Lee Hess, and sister, Myrtle Mary Hess.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2018, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, Kokomo, with Pastor Jerry Van Auken officiating. Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Army and the Kokomo V.F.W. Military Rites Team. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Tom's memory to First Evangelical Presbyterian Church.
