Shirley's Story

Shirley Ruth (Ross) Martin, 79, Kokomo, passed away Monday, July 17, 2017, at Golden Living Center in Kokomo. She was born July 24, 1937, in Tipton County, to Stanley J. and Mabel Ruth (Johnson) Ross. On Dec. 30, 1956, Shirley married Walter E. Martin and he preceded her in death April 25, 2016.
Shirley was a 1955 graduate of Tipton High School. She had worked at Tipton County Memorial Hospital for many years and then went to work at the Sisters of Saint Joseph Academy in Tipton.
In her spare time, Shirley enjoyed gardening, canning, baking, cooking and babysitting. She was the family caregiver, always spending her time caring for others.
Survivors include her children, Richard (Madonna Roberts) Earl Martin, Tipton, Roger Allen (Maria) Martin, Tipton, Linda Ann (Bill) Zwiefelhofer, Sharpsville, Randy Lee (Shelia) Martin, Elwood, and daughter-in-law, Karen Martin, Tipton; grandchildren, Christopher (ChiBui) Martin, Eric (Krystal) Martin, Brittney (Josh) Fakes, Chad (Kristin Kruger) Martin, Michael (Kira) Zwiefelhofer, Ashley Zwiefelhofer, Cody (Suzanne) Martin, Jileesa Martin and Zachary Epps; great-grandchildren, Marra, Maddix and Maryn Zwiefelhofer, Jace, Brody, and Sophie Fakes, Cayden Martin, George, Anastasia and Ezra Martin, Cadynce, Kenedy and Cooper Martin; sister-in-law, Juanita Murphy, Summerville, South Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter; her son, Ralph Eugene Martin; her grandchildren, Alisha Martin and Bradley Eugene Martin; and her brother and sister-in-law, Don and Vickie Ross.
Funeral services are planned for 1 p.m. Friday, July 21, 2017, at Porter Funeral Home, 726 E. North St., Tipton, with Pastor David Welsh officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the same date as services. Interment will follow in Tipton's Fairview Cemetery.
