Ruth's Story

Ruth Harriet Hengst, 99, Burlington, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2017, at Wellbrooke of Kokomo. She was born April 12, 1918, in Antioch, to John Jacob and Ella Belle Atkins Bible. On Sept. 19, 1937, Ruth married Wilson Harry Hengst; he preceded her in death on July 4, 2001.
In 1936, Ruth graduated from Little Jeff High School in Washington Township, where she played the saxophone and piano in the orchestra. Throughout her life she was a homemaker and a farmer's wife; she and her husband farmed in both Clinton and Boone Counties. Ruth loved being outdoors; she enjoyed gardening and her flowers, she entered 4-H exhibits and won numerous ribbons throughout the years and also enjoyed mushroom hunting. She was a past member of Thorntown United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir and was a member of the United Methodist Women. Ruth sang in the Boone County Chorus and was a member of the Home Ec Club in Boone County for over 56 years, member of the Burlington and Thorntown Senior Centers, where she attended Bible study for many years. Ruth was an avid IU basketball fan, liked solving Sudoku puzzles and playing card games, especially Skip-Bo.
Surviving Ruth are her children, Lois (Don) Gault and Martha Kuntz, both of Kokomo; grandchildren, Jeff Gault, Brian Gault, Sunshine (Tony) Slaughter, Crystal (fiance Shane Roe) Funk, Jacob (Sarah) Kuntz and Elizabeth Kuntz; six great-grandchildren, with a seventh expected in spring; and one great-great-grandson.
In addition to her husband, Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Matthew Kuntz; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Amadeus and Elsie Bible, John and Ora Bible, and Enoch and Mildred Bible; and sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Elsworth Shaff.
Visitation will be noon to the start of the funeral service at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017, at Genda Funeral Home in Frankfort. Pastor Dennis Riggs will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Luke Cemetery in Frankfort.
