Robert Jesse Lawrence Rainer Jr., 56, Kokomo, went home into the loving arms of God at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2018, at his home, surrounded by family. He was born April 1, 1961, in Starkville, Mississippi, to Robert Rainer Sr. and Orene (Peterson) Cook. On March 19, 1988, he married the love of his life, Julia Ann Gillard, in Falkner, Mississippi, and she survives.
Robert earned his high school diploma and associate degree in HVAC from Job Corps in 1984. He accepted Christ at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Falkner, Mississippi, and was consistently passionate about his relationship with God. He accepted his call to preach the Gospel of Christ while attending Second Missionary Baptist Church and then attended seminary school in both Marion and Indianapolis, Indiana. Robert was always a hard-working man, holding several jobs prior to becoming employed at Chrysler, where he worked for 28 years as a fork lift operator. Additionally, he served as an associate minister at Mount Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church and volunteered doing prison ministry for many years.
Robert was a dedicated, fun-loving family man who thoroughly enjoyed learning about his family history and taking trips to Mississippi to visit family. He played basketball and football in high school and loved fishing, hunting, good old school and gospel music.
In addition to his wife, Julia Ann Rainer, he is survived by his three daughters, Brittany (Brian II) Smith, Kezirah Rainer and Mariah Rainer; stepmother, Eve Rainer; five sisters, Darlene Rainer, Maeleen Prather-Morgan, Hattie (Morris Jr.) Luster, Michelle (Ronald) Rainer-Rutherford, and Latricia Cook; two aunts, Maglene (Mammie) Johnson and Mary (Eloise) Johnson; two uncles, R.C. Peterson and Jerry Peterson; several nieces and nephews; and a host of cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Rainer Sr., Orene Peterson-Cook, and stepfather, Preston Cook.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, March 10, 2018, at Mount Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, 1599 E. Sycamore St., Kokomo, with Pastor Lonnie E. Anderson Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Crown Point Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit from 11 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the church.
