Richard Dean Hixon, 73, Kokomo, passed away at 9:24 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018, at St. Vincent Seton Specialty Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born April 9, 1944, in Gary, Indiana, the son of Fred & Ellen (Bundy) Hixon. On Aug. 12, 1989, at Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, he married Carol S. Wence and she survives.
Rich was a graduate of Calumet High School, in Gary. He received his master's degree in 1973 from Indiana University in Bloomington. He taught school for Kokomo Center Schools for 44 years, retiring in 2009 from Wallace School. He was a member of Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer and the Howard County Retired Teachers Association. Rich was an avid Indiana University Basketball and Bobbie Knight fan, who enjoyed cooking, traveling, and time spent with his grandchildren.
Along with his wife Carol, Rich is survived by his children, Seth (Elizabeth) Wence and Jessica Davenport; grandchildren, David and Faith; special niece, Brittaney Ewing; siblings, Marilyn (Kenny) Hill, Phyllis Roche, George (Dianne) Hixon, Ronnie (Betty) Hixon, Art (Lyvonne) Hixon and Ken Hixon; sisters-in-law, Joyce Hixon and Judy Hixon; brother-in-law, Jim Jansen; along with several nieces and nephews.
Rich was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Ellen Hixon; sister, Bev Jansen; brothers, Jeff Hixon, Marvin Hixon, and infant brothers, Fred & Lloyd; and brother-in-law, Gene Roche.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2018, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, Kokomo, with Pastor William Allison officiating. Burial will follow in Albright Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
