Richard 'Dick''s Story
Richard "Dick" L. Fortner, 86, Greentown, passed away at his home at 5:45 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 23. He was born in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, to Jesse and Irene (Cantwell) Fortner on Dec. 27, 1930. He married Margaret (Cardwell) on Nov. 26, 1970, and she preceded him in death on April 22, 2016.
Richard retired from Snyder Trucking and had worked in construction a lot, including working on the Skyway Bridge in Florida.
He had served in the United States Army in the 82nd Airborne, receiving an honorable discharge as staff sergeant.
He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, boating, camping and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his three daughters, Sharlet (Marshal) Meyer, Harlene Thomas and Rebecca Elkins; son, Harland "Jay" (Michelle) Christy; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two brothers; one sister; daughter, Elizabeth Snyder; son, Richard M. Fortner; and grandson, Michon Elkins.
Visitation for family and friends will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Hasler & Stout Funeral Home, 112 E. Main St., Greentown. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday also at Hasler & Stout Funeral Home with Pastor Ken Freeland officiating. Burial will follow the service in Sunset Memory Gardens, Kokomo.
