Ralph's Story

Ralph Alton Grotrian, 85, Kokomo, went home to heaven at 10:07 a.m. Friday, Sept. 22, 2017, from his home. He was born April 26, 1932, in Monroeville, the son of the late Albert and Louise (Koeneman) Grotrian. On Sept. 7, 1952, in Hoagland, he married Lois Houk and she survives.
Ralph was a graduate of Hoagland High School and a 1952 graduate of the International Business College. He served with the United States Army in Japan during the Korean War from 1952-1955, earning the rank of Corporal. He retired in 1994 from First Federal Savings Bank after 31 years.
Ralph's greatest joy was serving God by spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ in many foreign countries as well as right here at home. He was telling others about his Savior even in his last days. Ralph was an active member of Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer. He participated in several short term mission trips with the church and was a world traveler spreading God's Word.
Ralph was a loving husband, father and grandfather. To his family he was a provider, mentor, counselor, and spiritual leader. Ralph served his local community in the Kokomo Chamber of Commerce, United Way, Gideon's International Bible Study and had served on the board of directors for the Kokomo Rescue Mission.
Along with his wife of 65 years, Lois, Ralph is survived by his daughters, Kristine (Jeffery) Himelick, Kokomo, Susan Evans, Greentown, and Sara (Matthew) Peterson, Kokomo; grandchildren, Erin (Justin) Estle, Amy Ford, Megan (Doug) Nelson, Jason (Annette) Himelick, Tori (Joshua) Hayes, Lindsey (Zack) Pence, Emily (Andrew) Pohl and Tyler (Ashleigh) Peterson; along with 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Tom (Janet) Grotrian; and sister, Lavon Dobbins.
Ralph was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services celebrating Ralph's victory over death will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, 2017, at Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, 705 Southway Blvd. East, with Pastors William Allison and Barry Akers officiating. Burial will follow in Albright Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made in Ralph's memory to Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, Redeemer Lutheran School, or Gideon's International. Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.
