Preston Dolie Abney, 75, Kokomo, passed away at 6:04 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, 2017, at his residence. Born Sept. 26, 1942, in Mount Vernon, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Marion Abney and Sally (Cheney) Abney.
He was a 1960 graduate of Broadhead High School. Preston was a veteran, serving in the United States Air Force. On Dec. 18, 1965, in Wabash, Indiana, he married Carol (Blanton), and she survives. He was a brick mason and owned and operated Abney Masonry for 47 years until his passing. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, telling jokes, playing cards, and spending time with his grandson.
He is survived by his wife of over 51 years, Carol Abney, Kokomo; one daughter, Gwendolyn (Thomas) Abney-Cunningham, Kalamazoo, Michigan; three brothers, Keytron Abney, Terry (Carol) Abney and John Gerald Abney, all of Montpelier, Indiana; six sisters, Zella Miller, Faye (John) Holbrook, and Barbara Johnson, all of Mount Vernon, Kentucky, Kathy Utterback, Ruby (Rick) Stone, both of Lexington, Kentucky, and Ruth Nestleroad, Montpelier, Indiana. There is also one grandchild, William Abney Cunningham, and several nieces and nephews.
Preston was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Marion Abney Jr., Keith Ray Abney, Tenon Abney, and Denzil Abney Sr.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017, at Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St. Pastor Dave Osborne will officiate. Burial with military rites by the United States Air Force and the Kokomo Military Rites Team will follow at Shiloh Cemetery, Howard County. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary. Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel is handling arrangements.
