Penne Jane (Bahr) Sample, 73, Kokomo, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2017, at her home. She was born April 19, 1944, to Charles F. and Alice (Tingleff) Bahr in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Penne attended Louisiana Polytechnic and Indiana University Kokomo, where she obtained bachelor's and master's degrees in elementary education. For 33 years, Penne taught second and third grade at Pettit Park for Kokomo Center Schools. Penne was active in her school, working on many committees, after-school functions, as well as mentoring young teachers.
Penne was married to her husband, Larry, for 25 years, and he preceded her in death, along with her parents and her stepmother, Carolyn (Andrews) Bahr.
Penne is survived by her loving mini-me daughter, Sally (Ben) Bunce, Fishers; her wise-cracking and loving son, Edward (Jessica) Sample, Phoenix, Arizona; and her sisters, Barbara Shassetz, Litchfield, Arizona, and Judith (Walter) Sundberg, Genoa, Illinois. Penne's granddaughters, Ella and Norah Bunce, played a special part in her life. She loved watching them grow into such incredible young ladies. Also surviving are multiple nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. She will be especially missed by her special friends, Cathy Radke, who abducted Penne on many unassuming car rides, ending in surprising places (and often with ice cream), and best buddies, Debbie Tyler and Jerry Wade.
A memorial service to celebrate Penne's wonderful life will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2017, at Sunset Memory Garden Funeral Home. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be directed to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), which can be found online at www.aspca.org, or local animal shelters. As an avid animal lover, Penne would appreciate that.
