Pauline (Phillips) Guge, 98, Burlington, departed her earthly home at 5:55 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, 2017. She was born April 23, 1919, in Brown County, to Carmel and Elsie (Pruitt) Phillips.
As a young girl, she loved everything Mother Nature had to offer and enjoyed roaming the hills of Brown County. Through her early years, her family attended Beck's Grove Christian Church, where the Phillips family lived and were long time members of the church.
Throughout most of her adult life, she maintained a place in Brown County, where she enjoyed the solitude and made sure her children and grandchildren were left with endearing memories of the back roads and hills of Brown County.
Pauline's mother passed away when Pauline was 10 years old. Her father then accepted a teaching and coaching position at Sharpsville High School and moved his family to a farm near West Middleton. Her father died as a result of a farm accident April 25, 1934, two days after Pauline's 15th birthday. She then made her home with her grandmother, Olive Phillips, her brother, Wendell, and the support of her uncle and aunt, Ralph and Nellie (Rinehart) Phillips.
She graduated from West Middleton High School in 1937. On July 1, 1939, she married Paul "Jim" W. Guge, at Mount Echo Park in Cincinnati, Ohio, and they were married 75 years before his passing on July 14, 2014.
For over 70 years, Pauline and Jim were a part of the Burlington community, where they operated Minneapolis Moline Farm Implements and owned and operated the Burlington Cafe. They were always active in the community, including Burlington School and Burlington Christian Church and were charter members of Burlington Faith Church of Christ.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Bethan Buckley, Burlington, and Janelle (Bob) Oakley, Burleson, Texas; grandsons, Kevin (Patrick) Flora, Kurt (Saundra) Flora, Jeff (Tara) Oakley, Jason (Christiane) Oakley and Stephen Buckley; great-grandchildren, Britney Flora, Katelyn (Tyler) Smith, Ashtyn Oakley, Carson Oakley, Lexi Buckley and Logan Buckley; great-great-granddaughter, Addison Joann Smith; nephew, J.C. Phillips; niece, Deborah Phillips McCroskey; and cousin, Byron (Paulene) Phillips.
The family wishes to express sincere gratitude for the in-home care given by daughter Bethan Buckley. Also, special thanks goes to the Faith Church family and Great Lakes Hospice.
Funeral services for Pauline will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14, 2017, at Burlington Faith Church of Christ, 1701 Michigan Road, Burlington, with Pastor Kurt Flora and Steve Cole officiating. Burial will follow in Burlington Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit from 11 a.m. until the time of service Monday at the church.
