Monte A. Nelson, 60, Kokomo, passed away at 1:46 a.m. Saturday, May 12, 2018, at Community Howard Regional Health in Kokomo. He was born July 25, 1957, in Howard County, the son of William H. and Helen (Eikenberry) Nelson. On Jan. 25, 1980, he married Gwynne DeWitt, who survives.
Monte was a 1976 graduate of Western High School. After high school, he was employed at Ortman Drilling for 18 years. He was currently employed at Chrysler as a pipefitter for ITP 1, where he was a member of Pipefitters Union 4460 and UAW Local 685. Monte loved drinking coffee, fishing, building, bird watching, mowing and tending to his yard, and NASCAR. He also enjoyed going to the horse races, playing cards, horseshoes, and dice. Monte especially enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Even after Monte's passing, he is continuing to help others by being a donor. He also participated in a study to help others going through cancer treatment.
Along with his wife, Gwynne, Monte is survived by his children, Shana and Tommy Caine, Jennifer Nelson, and Elly and Tony Bowling; grandchildren, Thomas Caine Jr., Parker Caine, Daelin Bowling, and Daizee Bowling; granddog, Jack; and also his many friends and his extended family at ITP 1.
Monte was preceded in death by his parents, William H. Nelson and Helen Jenkins; and his canine companion, Biff.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 17, 2018, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, Kokomo, with Mickey Droke officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Feel free to dress casually, it's what Monte would have wanted.
