Michael's Story

Michael S. Newberry, 65, Greentown, is now with our Lord in Heaven. He passed peacefully in his sleep at his home at 5:55 a.m. Thursday, June 29, 2017. He was born Aug. 5, 1951, in Kokomo, and was raised by his grandparents, Earnest and Luella Mae Turner. On May 28, 1971, he married the love of his life, Cynthia G. Reed. They were wed by the bride's grandfather, Pastor Donald P. Duncan.
Mike worked at Haynes International for 30 years and retired in 2009. He truly enjoyed life. He loved the outdoors, drag racing at Bunker Hill, fishing, hunting, gardening, golfing and bowling. Mike had many friends and co-workers whom he loved. Most of all, he loved and cherished his family. He was a hard worker with a heart of gold. Above all, Mike will be remembered for his kindness and great sense of humor.
Mike is survived by his wife of 46 years, Cindy Newberry; children, Deborah (Mark) Goins, Shana (Charlie) Tharp, Katherine (Dennis) Johnson and John (Janelle) Newberry; grandchildren, Michael Dunkle, Morgan (Brian) Smith, JD Tharp, Dakota Tharp, Jackson Tharp, Izabella Tharp, Tyler Tharp, Samantha Tharp, Kamden Johnson, Trenton Johnson, Brooklynn Johnson and Peyton Johnson; mother-in-law, Shirley Simon; brother-in-law, Ted Secrease; and special cousin, Karen Painter.
Mike was preceded in death by his mother, Lela Virginia Lindsay; father, Willard Newberry; grandparents, Ernest and Luella Turner; brother-in-law, Steven A. Reed; grandson, Jacob Tharp; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road. Friends may visit with the family from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
