Michael R. "Iron Mike" Crawford, 77, Kokomo, passed away on Thursday, June 29, 2017 at his residence. He was born in Kokomo on Nov. 27, 1939, to the late Verl B. (Sam) and Alice M. (Lemberger) Crawford. Michael married Deena Lou (Worthy) Crawford on July 28, 1970, in Kokomo, and she preceded him in death on July 27, 2014.
Michael attended St. Joan of Arc and St. Patrick's Catholic Schools in his youth. After graduating from Kokomo High School in 1968, he started working for Chrysler as an inspector. Michael retired from Chrysler in 1995 after 36 years of loyal service. He had perfect attendance, never missing a day of grade or high school or his career his whole life.
After retirement, he and his wife, Deena, moved to Florida to live the life of leisure. He soon realized he missed his hometown of Kokomo and his grandsons, so Michael and Deena moved back where he felt the most comfortable. Michael was an avid hunter and fisherman in his youth, but he was the most proud after wrangling his first deer in 1992. He was also a talented artist, who worked with oil painting and created beautiful oil-painted saw blades. He also designed bows by wrapping rods and fashioned arrows for bow hunting.
Michael had a special sense of humor and was well-liked by many. To some of his friends, he was known as "Iron Mike" even though he stood 5 foot, 7 inches, but he swore he was over 6 foot. He was a wonderful grandpa, a devoted husband and a terrific father. Michael loved his wife, and the last three years were often too much to bear. They are finally reunited and may we find peace knowing he does not have any more pain. He will be missed every day. God speed!
Michael leaves behind his daughters, Alice Crawford, Kokomo, and Erin (Ray) Smith, Titusville, Florida; son, John Michael (Claudania) Shanks, Bunker Hill; four grandsons, A.J. Nelson, Alex Nelson, Kokomo, Zac (Alicia Rennaker) Shanks, and Cody Shanks, Bunker Hill; brother, Bruce Crawford; two sisters, Marilyn Ormbsy and Sister Christina Crawford; brother-in-law, Charles Ormsby; former son-in-law, Adam Nelson Sr.; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Michael was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack Crawford and Richard Crawford; two sisters, Ruth Ormsby and Joan Crawford; and two sisters-in-law, Joyce Crawford and Patty Crawford.
A funeral service for Michael will be 1 p.m. Friday at Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St., Kokomo, with Pastor David Osborne officiating. Burial will follow at Kokomo Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will have a time of visitation for Michael from 11 a.m. until the time of service on Friday at the mortuary.
