Melvin "Mel" L. Brown, 63, Kokomo, went to be with his Lord and Savior at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, 2017, at his home. He was born Jan. 19, 1954, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of the late Burl and Zelma (Howk) Brown. On Dec. 1, 1973, in Ottumwa, Iowa, he married Pamela K. Lobdell, and she survives.
Mel was a 1972 graduate of Ottumwa High School. He retired Feb. 1, 2014, from the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad after 42 years of service as a conductor. He worked and lived in Alliance, Nebraska, for 41 years, moving to Kokomo upon retirement in 2014.
Mel was a member of Crossroads Community Church. He earned his private pilot's license and in 2010 added his instrument rating. Mel was an avid golfer, reader, and loved flying his airplane. He loved sports of all kinds, especially his beloved St. Louis Cardinals.
Mel is survived by his wife, Pamela K. Brown, Kokomo; sisters, Carolyn Emberton, Canton, Illinois, Kathy (Lloyd) Patrick, Dakota Dunes, South Dakota, and Margaret (Larry) Grooms, Ottumwa, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Pat (Jim) Johnson, Kokomo, and Sylvia "Bunny" Brown, Sacramento, California; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Mel was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Merlon L. Brown.
A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Monday Dec. 11, 2017, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, Kokomo, with Karl Stoneking officiating. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 3 to 4 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
