Melvin C. Bontrager, 88, Kokomo, died at 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2017, at his residence. Melvin was born May 21, 1929, in Arthur, Illinois, to Christian N. and Lovina (Kauffman) Bontrager. He married Laura (Miller) Bontrager on Sept. 12, 1950, and she preceded him in death on May 31, 2010. They lived in matrimony for 59 years, 8½ months.
He was a member of the Old Order Amish Church.
Survivors include two daughters and three sons, Ida Mae (Emory) Herschberger, Lonnie (Sara) Bontrager, Wilma (Jacob) Kauffman, Clarence (Ruth Ann) Bontrager and Christy (Lydia Mae) Bontrager; 20 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; four brothers; seven sisters; and five sisters-in-law.
He was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother, five sisters, two brothers, one great-granddaughter and one son-in-law.
Funeral services will be 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017, at Bethany Fellowship School, 5169 N. 600 East, Kokomo. Burial will follow in Christner Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, 2017, at the school. Hasler & Stout Funeral Home, Greentown, is handling arrangements.
