Mary's Story

Mary Virginia Branch Altherr, a resident of Point Clear and long-time citizen of Alabama, died Wednesday, May 24, 2017. She was born May 26, 1928 in Kokomo. A homemaker and writer, she published four novels and a collection of short stories under the pen name, M.V. Branch.
She was a member of St. Francis at the Point, Baldwin County Pensters and several writing groups, as well as an inactive member of P.E.O. Sorority and Lakewood Ladies Golf Association.
In past years, she was an avid bridge player and a volunteer tutor with the Literacy Council. While living in Huntsville, Alabama, she was a volunteer at Huntsville Hospital and a Red Cross worker for the Jones Valley School clinic.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 67 years, Jack Richard Altherr Sr., and her son, Jeffrey Lee Altherr.
Survivors include sons, Jack Richard Altherr Jr., Greensboro, Georgia, and Joel Tracy Altherr, Gainesville, Georgia; daughter-in-law, Lucy Jordan Altherr (Jack), Greensboro, Georgia; granddaughters, Carrie Altherr Jennings (Hank), Roswell, Georgia, and Lisa Bell (Jason), Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin; grandson, Jonathan Richard Altherr, Athens, Georgia; great-granddaughters, Julia Bell, Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin, Audrey Jennings, Roswell, Georgia, and Caleigh Nicks, Tomball, Texas; great-grandson, Henry Jennings, Roswell, Georgia; and sister, Shirley Maksymicz (Michael), Beverly Hills, Florida.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Friday, June 2, 2017, at St. Francis at the Point, Point Clear. The family will have a private graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Fairhope Library or St. Francis at the Point.
