Martha's Story

Martha Jean Mitchell, born Dec. 11, 1921, in Tipton County, the only child of Ruth Dale Foster Patterson and Harry Patterson, passed away at 6 a.m. Tuesday, May 16, 2017, in Alexandria Hospital, Alexandria, Virginia.
My mother and father, Richard Eugene Mitchell (passed October 1999) were married in Hopewell Church on Memorial Day 1941. I remain their only child, Ruth Elizabeth (Mitchell) Britt, born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1949.
Mom's early years were spent on the family farm at the intersection of U.S. 31 and old Normandy Pike. Her passions growing up were music (singing and playing piano) and school government activities. Her yearbook shows her in costume as the lead in an operetta. Later she sang locally on radio.
After school Mom worked at Citizens Bank while Daddy was serving in World War II. Upon his return, he joined Shell Oil and then they traveled the United States, Canada and Venezuela for work. She continued to work as bookkeeper or bank teller when she was not taking care of me.
They returned to their home in Tipton County in 1965 to be near their parents. Mom then returned to Citizens Bank, moving over to Farmers Loan and Trust until she retired. As a member of Kemp Methodist Church, Mom became active in the church choir. She was a life member of Eastern Star, played bridge with ladies from Tipton, Kempton and Sharpsville and created many lovely pieces of needlework (two of which were later honored with awards at the Woodlawn Needlework Show in Alexandria, Virginia).
In 1996 they sold the farm and moved to Alexandria, Virginia (Montebello Condominium to be near me), where she had lived the past 21 years. Again she enjoyed many bridge groups, the garden club, performing with the music club and sharing time with me, even ride-a-longs and lunches to see many of my clients.
Mom was a huge influence in my life as my cheerleader-supporter, a shining example of womanhood through her strength and love and, most of all, my best friend who was always there for me. I have been very lucky and truly blessed to have had so much time with her.
Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Monday, May 22, 2017, at Fairview Cemetery at the Patterson stone marker.
