Marjorie's Story

Marjorie Alice Sonafrank, 91, Bunker Hill, passed away peacefully at 5:36 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, 2017, at Hickory Creek Healthcare in Peru. The eldest child of the late Paul Jehu and Ruth Ethel Hutchcroft Wickersham, she was born in Kokomo Feb. 23, 1926.
In 1937, she moved with her family to Bunker Hill. She was a 1944 graduate of Bunker Hill High School. Within days of her high school commencement, she married her classmate and sweetheart, Russell Eugene Sonafrank, on May 9, 1944, at the Bunker Hill Methodist Church. Three days after the wedding, Mr. Sonafrank was required to report for duty with the U.S. Navy. While her husband was serving during World War II, Mrs. Sonafrank did her part for the war effort on the home front by sewing parachutes at the former Reliance factory in Kokomo. After the war, the young couple started their family and remained in Bunker Hill. Mr. and Mrs. Sonafrank were married 56 years until Russell's passing on Feb. 16, 2001.
In 1957, she began work as a clerk at the Bunker Hill Post Office. Thus began a nearly 30-year career during which she as appointed postmaster in 1971. Until her retirement in 1986, her friendly smile and pleasant demeanor were familiar to countless customers. During retirement, she enjoyed shopping, relaxing in her swimming pool, and dining out with longtime friends Harry and Berdean Melson. She also enjoyed visiting with friends Lois and Harry Holt.
Her deep love for her family was unconditional. She adored her grandchildren. She loved her siblings and regarded each of her nieces and nephews as if they were her own children.
Survivors include daughter, Jo Ellen Christner and her husband, Steve, Peru; son, Steven John Sonafrank and his wife, Jennifer, Indianapolis; granddaughter, Amy Ruth Christner, North Port, Florida; grandson, Benjamin Thomas Christner, Indianapolis; sisters, Julia Banter, Pierceton, and Marilyn Linn and her husband, Charles, Fort Wayne; brother-in-law, Robert Sonafrank and his wife, LaVerne, Somerset; 10 nieces and nine nephews.
She was preceded in death by her eldest son, Russell Eugene Sonafrank II, and her brother, Paul Thomas Wickersham.
Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2017, at Allen Funeral Home, 136 S. Elm St., Bunker Hill. The funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, 2017, with the Rev. Evan Strong officiating. Burial will follow in Springdale Cemetery, Bunker Hill.
