Margery Christine (Hisey) Brinkerhoff, 91, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018, with family by her side. She was born on March 26, 1926, in Portland, Indiana, the daughter of Fred and Adda Hisey. On April 26, 1947, she married Donald Edwin Brinkerhoff of Bryant, Indiana, who preceded her in death.
Our beloved Mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Margery, graduated from Portland High School. She earned a secretarial degree from Ball State University. In 1975, she returned to Indiana University of Kokomo where she studied and completed a bachelor's degree in nursing. In 1979, she and Don went to Germany and lived there for three years. Don worked for General Motors and Marge worked with the Red Cross in the Frankfort Army Hospital as a volunteer nurse. While living in Germany, they traveled to many countries throughout Europe.
After marriage, she moved to Kokomo and became secretary for Grace United Methodist Church where she was a member for over 70 years. Don and Marge served as church youth leaders at Grace. Marge also traveled with Don on mission trips to Mississippi and Puerto Rico. After having a family, Marge served as a Sunday school teacher, President of Grace Women's Circle, Den Mother for Cub Scouts, Girl Scout Troop Leader, Board Member for Friendship Home, an avid volunteer for Meals on Wheels, and was active in Kokomo Interracial Group. Marge was a dedicated mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Marge would always see the good in people, and never underestimated the power of faith and hope. She will always be remembered for her kindness of heart, commitment to family and positive attitude towards life.
Marge is survived by her son Stephen Brinkerhoff (Wanda) of Plainfield; daughters, Diane Brinkerhoff of North Carolina, Janis Dutton (Michael) of Greenwood, and Carol Rakestraw (Mike) of Kokomo; seven grandchildren, Stephanie Cook, Zachary Brinkerhoff, Chase Helms (Jessica), Melanie Jimison (James), Kevin Rivers, Megan Rakestraw Capouch (Donald) and Nolan Rakestraw; and 2 great-grandchildren, Adrianna Wilson and Asher Helms.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Don, sister Winifred Brinkerhoff (Burton), brother Robert Hisey, and grandchild Anna Christine Helms.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2018, from noon to 2 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 219 W. Mulberry St., Kokomo, IN, directly followed by a funeral service starting at 2 p.m., with Pastor Brian Cook officiating. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Sunset Memory Garden Funeral Home.
