Judge Stephen's Story
Judge Stephen Mills Jessup, 74, Kokomo, passed away at 4:09 a.m. Friday, Feb. 16, 2018, at Wellbrooke of Kokomo. He was born Feb. 3, 1944, in Kokomo, to John and Hester (Mills) Jessup. On Aug. 26, 1967, he married his childhood sweetheart, Susan Bredemus, and she survives.
Steve graduated from North Central High School in Indianapolis. He went on to graduate from Hanover College in 1966, where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. He earned his J.D. degree from the Indiana University School of Law, Indianapolis. While in law school, he was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash for his work with the Indiana Judicial Study Commission. He returned to Kokomo in October of 1969 and joined the law firm of Lacey, Angel, Good and Jessup. He and his associates would later form the law firm of Russell, McIntire, Jessup, Hilligoss and Raquet. While practicing law, he also served as juvenile court referee for 17 years. In 1994 he was elected judge of Howard County Superior Court II. He retired on Dec. 31, 2010.
Steve had been a member of First Evangelical Presbyterian Church since October of 1970, and he served as both an elder and a deacon. He looked forward to every Thursday morning with his men's Bible study group. Mentoring young kids was also a big part of Steve's life. He was a mentor at Lafayette Park Elementary School and was also involved with the Big Brother/Big Sister program, where he was a big brother to Chris Hillsinger, who remained a big part of his life. In 1992, Steve and his family became a host home for a Taiwanese child, Susan Ho. Susan remains a part of their family to this day. Steve was not only a devoted and caring husband, but also a passionate dad to his three daughters. His grandchildren were the light of his life and he took great joy in being with them.
In addition to his wife, Susan Jessup, he is survived by his daughters, Kathy (Keith) Fehn, Karen (Brian) Ungerer and Megan (Jason) Smyth; grandchildren, Paige, Gretchen, and Evan Fehn, Alex (Calvin) Berghoff, Nicholas and Molly Ungerer, Jacob (Shaleena) Smyth, Emaleigh, Sara and Jeshua Smyth; great-grandchildren, Foster Berghoff, Adrianna, Annesty and Kezlynn Smyth. He's also survived by his brother, Dr. Thomas (Jeep) Jessup of Brookings, Oregon, and his mother-in-law, Marion Bredemus.
He was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law, Charles Bredemus.
Friends are invited to visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2018, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, Kokomo. Funeral services for Steve will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018, at First Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 2000 W. Jefferson St., with Pastor Jerry VanAuken officiating. Burial will take place at a later date at North Union Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions be made to the Fontan Blood Pump Research, which will benefit Steve's great-grandbaby, Foster Mills, and other babies with HLHS and similar heart conditions.
