Josephine's Story

Josephine M. (Hollingsworth) Michaelson, 94, loving mother and wife, born Feb. 17, 1923, in Russiaville, Indiana, passed away June 15, 2017.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, and a brother, Robert Hollingsworth.
Jo was crowned Miss Kokomo at 18, and met her future husband, Lenny, playing trumpet at a jazz gig in northern Indiana the summer of 1942. She and Lenny married on June 5, 1943, in Laredo, Texas, where he was stationed during World War II. After the war, they moved to Chicago, Illinois, and later to Skokie, Illinois, where they settled and had two children, Steve and David.
The family moved in 1958 to Tampa, Florida, where Josephine raised her family and did interior decorating and some home design for Lenny's home-building business. "She had great inspiration for floor plan/design concepts for the Florida home," according to Lenny's architect, Jim Teske. After tweaking original plans, her ideas undoubtedly generated more sales.
Jo was regarded by everyone who knew her as a gracious, loving person who always went out of her way to help others. She stayed friends for life with the people she met along life's journey. A big thank you to all her lifelong friends, including Helene (Colby) Drake; friends for 60-plus years, Olga Alcolado and Violet Alfonso; friends for 50-plus years, Rebecca Maybury; friends for 40 years, Helen Thompson, Beth Stewart-Martinez (Al); and Jo's business partner for 33 years, Stanley Ashe.
Jo contributed to so many causes over the years, including Metropolitan Ministries and Hadassah.
We would like to thank the many care givers at Hospice, St. Joseph's Hospital, and Rehabilitation & Healthcare of Tampa. They all helped care for her with great compassion and comfort.
She is survived by sons, Steve Michaelson (Connie), of Pottstown, Pennsylvania, David Michaelson of Tampa, Florida; sister, Charlotte Young, Kokomo.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice, St. Joseph's Hospital or the Dementia/Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA).
