John R. Gillam, 92, Elwood, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2017, at Miller's Merry Manor in Tipton. He was born Feb. 5, 1925, in Elwood, to Ora and Martha (McQuitty) Gillam.
John worked as a mechanic and trouble shooter for John Deere for 22½ years. He was a 1943 graduate of Frankton High School. John married Mable Frances Davis on Feb. 17, 1946, and shared over 70 years of marriage. John was a member of Central Wesleyan Church, Elwood. He and Frances were members of the Hoosier Heartlanders Camping Club. John enjoyed all types of tractors and enjoyed spending time with his family.
John's family includes son, Robert E. (Tricia) Gillam, Tipton; daughter, Virginia "Kay" (Mike) Landseadel, Tipton; two brothers, William "Ralph" Gillam and Danny L. Gillam; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special family friend, Jim "Cookie" Cook, Elwood.
John was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mable Frances (Davis) Gillam; daughter, Roberta Kyle; two brothers, Milton Gillam and Donald Gillam; and four sisters-in-law.
A funeral service for John will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home, Elwood, with Pastor Laurine Hartig, Hobbs Christian Church, and Pastor Ben Capshaw, Central Wesleyan Church, officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, Elwood. Visitation will be 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home.
