John F. DeLong, 95, Kokomo, died at 11 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2017, at North Woods Village. He was born May 25, 1922, in Kokomo, the son of Glen and Merle (Walker) DeLong. On March 17, 1945, in Chicago, he married Irene (Prettyman) DeLong, and she survives.
John was a 1940 graduate of Kokomo High School and later was a graduate of the Valparaiso Technical Institute. He served honorably in the United States Army Air Force during World War II. He was the owner of Lucas Manufacturing, manufacturers of wheel weights, from 1949 to 1979. In 1979, John took over ownership and management of DeLong Auto Parts, a family owned business since 1922.
He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, where in 1935, he was a member of the first Boy Scout troop at the church. Other memberships include the Kokomo Country Club, where he enjoyed golfing and playing duplicate bridge with his wife and their friends, the Kokomo Elks Lodge and the Ham Radio Club, where he was known by the call letters, W9BYN. He enjoyed being a member of the Kokomo Flying Club, having a private pilot license and owning his own plane.
Surviving in addition to his wife of Kokomo are two sons, Marvin F. DeLong, Kokomo, and David J. DeLong and his wife Chris, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; three grandchildren, Justin DeLong, West Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, Scott DeLong and his wife Michelle, and Ashley Mast and her husband Kevin, all of Jupiter, Florida; and three great-grandsons, Elijah, Sef and Mays.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2017, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, with the Pastor Duane Carlisle officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Greentown. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until service time on Tuesday at the funeral home.
