Jerry's Story

Text size

Jerry Joseph Pace, Sr. 82, passed away at 8:15 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 11, 2017, at his home. Though our hearts are aching, we are rejoicing as today, Jerry has been reunited with his beloved wife, Phyllis. Jerry was the fourth son of Curtis DeWalt Sr. and Rebecca Josephine Pace, born on Nov. 17, 1935, in Harford Twp., Adams County, Indiana. He was a special gift for his mother's 29th birthday.
He graduated from Geneva High School in 1953. After working a year, he joined the United States Air Force in 1954 and became a member of Strategic Air Command (SAC). While on leave in 1956 from Washington, DC, he met the love of his life, Phyllis Ann Hartley, across the street from his parent's in Marion. After a very short courtship of three dates, they married on Oct. 20, 1956, in Geneva, Indiana. A month later, he flew out to Alaska for a year, which lead to his strong dislike of snow and cold weather. He was stationed in several places, but his favorite was the time in Guam where the weather was perfect, and the temperature was warm and balmy.
In 1966, Jerry left the Air Force with a rank of Technical Sargent and moved the family back to Indiana. Jerry worked for Indiana Bell, AT&T, and EDS, retiring in 1997 from active work, and he enjoyed active retirement. He loved traveling with family and friends, helping people and family cookouts with our annual Ladder Toss contest. One of his favorite activities was creating scavenger hunts for his grandchildren during Easter, in which many miles were travelled in Tipton County to find their baskets.
Jerry was a role model for his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and many others using the Golden Rule and Ten Commandments as his guide. Jerry Sr. Was proud of his children, knowing they stood together and stood for their beliefs. He helped many people in various ways and always anonymously. He had a good relationship with the Lord and loved his church family.
Jerry is survived by his children, Mary, Jerry JR (Terri), Karl (Kim), and Kurt (Melissa); his grandchildren, Rebecca (Daniel) Miller, Trent Pace, Rachel (Roy Smith), Roger (Leah) Mossholder and Jeremiah (Sarah) Mossholder; his great-grandchildren, Harmony and Benjamin Pace, Isaiah Miller, and Wyatt, Waylon, Weston, and Annabelle Mossholder and DJ Smith. Also, he is survived by his brother, Jack (Kate) Pace; sister-in-law, Mary (Bill) Boyd; along with many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins, near and far. He leaves behind many friends, including his special friend, Nila Hayes, and his beloved dog, Job.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Phyllis; his parents, Curt Sr. and Jo Pace; his brothers, Curt Jr, Robert (Evelyn), Melvin, and Ed Sr. (Lou); and other brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
You are greatly loved and will be missed in many ways. We hope we did you proud, Dad.
Friends may visit with the family from 2 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 15, 2017, and from 10 a.m. until the start of the funeral service at Boyer Funeral Home, 204 N. Church St., Sharpsville.
