James Robert "JR" "Bob" Smith, died peacefully at home after a hard-fought battle at 10:35 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018. He was born in Kokomo to George Raymond "Ray" and Ivah Mae (Wood) Smith. He was later adopted by his stepfather, Harold Allen Smith. On May 19, 1961, he married Carolyn Snow at Calvary Baptist Church in Kokomo, and she survives.
Bob served with the United States Marine Corps for two years. He worked at Schrader's Automotive for several years before joining the Kokomo Fire Department, where he retired after 25 years. While on the fire department he was honored to receive the "Fireman of the Year Award." He and his fellow firefighters helped to provide a Christmas party for Bona Vista for several years. He worked delivering for Sears with other firefighters. He then went to work for and retired from DuPont Photomask.
Bob coached each of his daughters' softball teams for several years and made many friends while doing that, and those friendships continue. He was a hard worker and the work ethic that his three children possess is from the example he set.
Bob built one of their family homes and later totally redesigned he and Carolyn's dream property, which won the Howard County Beatification Award. It included his barn, where he could play table tennis with friends, have family get-togethers, or enjoy working on old cars. He had a special passion for '48 Plymouth coupes and loved to go to car shows. Bob loved to clean up the cars, if they needed it or not.
Bob loved people and had many lifelong friends. He enjoyed getting together for coffee at McDonald's with many of his friends after his retirement. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, friend, and was loved by many. Bob will be greatly missed.
Bob is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn Smith; children, Stacy (Rick) Leach, Sherri (Cliff) Townsend, and Jason Smith; grandchildren, Jordan (Katie) Weaver, Megan (Derek) Palmer, Eric Leach, Clay (Ashleigh) Weaver, Kiley (Dalton) Robinson, Kacey Roush, Kane Roush, and Haleigh Townsend, along with 10 great-grandchildren; and brother, Richard (Mary) Smith.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Dwain Montgomery; brother and sister-in-law, George and Sara Smith; infant siblings, Mary L., Barbara J., Jack R., and Caroline K. Smith; and great-granddaughter, Madeline Weaver.
The family would like to offer their thanks to Dr. Melanie Bozard, Dr. Nancy Frappier, Dr. James Scheffler, and the wonderful people from St. Vincent Hospice for their care. We were truly blessed to have such wonderful doctors and people caring for Bob.
